Hey everyone! I’m not dead! I’ve just been phenomenally busy.
Anyway, I’m sorry to have abandoned the blog, but I will be writing a “wrap-up” post about my experiences following eveyrthing Cosmo has told me to do. And if you have emailed me, requesting to answer my survey, I haven’t forgotten you–it’s just that SCAD papers take a precedence over writing surveys.
Meanwhile, let’s talk about the Pill turning 50, and Cosmo getting some sort of award over it.
I think it was a phenomenal mistake to give Kate White an award. Yes, Cosmo writes articles that mention the Pill. But those articles? Are awful. Cosmo did have advice on safer sex in the October issue, but the useful advice was hidden behind lots of scare tactics, heteronormativity, and unhelpful euphemisms. Cosmo’s reporting isn’t smart–it’s ridiculously juvenile. I was not even a twinkle in my parent’s eye when Helen Gurley Brown was at the magazine, so I can’t judge if early Cosmo was like early Playboy: Smart, intelligent, and having damn good articles.
Honestly, if given the chance, I wouldn’t pose in American Playboy, or agreed to be interviewed in Cosmo. However, if French Playboy or BUST Magazine called…
